In the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, over 100 armed groups are fighting for control of the region's rich mineral resources, with ethnic tensions and weak state control as a backdrop. These groups include both local militias seeking to protect their communities and larger rebels with political and economic goals. One well-known group is the March 23 Movement (M23), which is believed to be supported by Rwanda and has recently launched an offensive. This complex dynamic contributes to long-standing conflicts in the region.
