German government: Plans to reintroduce a new military service

The German government has decided on plans to reintroduce a new military service. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius wants all young men to indicate their willingness and suitability for military service in a digital questionnaire when they reach the age of 18 from next year.

The new Military Service Act is intended to reintroduce data collection, which has no longer existed since the suspension of compulsory military service in 2011. According to Pistorius, the Bundeswehr currently lacks a sufficient personnel base to achieve the target troop strength of around 460,000 soldiers for NATO's defense goals. A large proportion of these would have to be drawn from the reserves.

The plan is to provide six months of basic training for conscripts, which can be extended to up to 23 months if necessary. The monthly payment is to be at least 1,800 euros. The law could come into force as early as May next year if the coalition supports the ambitious timetable.

The aim is to protect children from psychological and physical harm caused by excessive use of social media, particularly through problematic content. Reactions are mixed: while some welcome the law, others criticize it as an encroachment on freedom.
